Reductions in California's Urban Fossil Fuel CO 2 Emissions During the COVID‐19 Pandemic

چکیده

Fossil fuel carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions (ffCO2) constitute the majority of greenhouse gas and are main determinant global climate change. The COVID-19 pandemic caused wide-scale disruption to human activity provided an opportunity evaluate our capability detect ffCO2 emission reductions. Quantifying changes in levels is especially challenging cities, where mitigation policies being implemented but local lead spatially temporally complex atmospheric mixing ratios. Here, we assess patterns associated with pandemic-induced using direct observations on-road CO2 mole fractions Los Angeles (LA) urban area analyses radiocarbon (14C) content annual grasses collected by community scientists throughout California, USA. With mobility restrictions place 2020, observed a significant reduction across centers. In LA, enhancements were 60 ± 16% lower than corresponding period 2019 rebounded pre-pandemic 2021. Plant 14C analysis indicated reductions 5 10 ppm 2020 relative LA. However, trajectories varied substantially region sector as COVID-related relaxed. Further development these techniques could aid efforts monitor decarbonization developing countries without established monitoring infrastructure.

Interactive comment on “ Fire vs . fossil fuel : all CO 2 emissions are not created equal

The manuscript by Landry and Matthews documents how CO2 emissions generated from global wildfires differ from those generated by fossil fuel combustion in terms of atmospheric fraction and temperature. The authors use a coupled model to assess this, and also show temperature effects from altered land surface albedo. There are some potentially interesting and useful results, including the net vs...

A synthesis of carbon dioxide emissions from fossil-fuel combustion

This synthesis discusses the emissions of carbon dioxide from fossil-fuel combustion and cement production. While much is known about these emissions, there is still much that is unknown about the details surrounding these emissions. This synthesis explores our knowledge of these emissions in terms of why there is concern about them; how they are calculated; the major global efforts on inventor...
